We have a very finite presence in space and time. Perspective thinking allows us to see challenges in context. Perspective thinking may seem like a philosophical exercise at first, but the value of understanding the scale against which we ultimately measure our personal realities cannot be underestimated. We value experiences by contrasting them to expectations created by our environment and past experiences. To think in perspective is to be able to contrast and reframe your current challenge against a bigger universal reality. This facet allows us to see challenges in context. One is having a clearly defined strategy and the other is the ability to think in perspective. Cultivated as a habit, big picture thinking can help manage people and time with grace, and help turn challenges into opportunities. This helps avoid unnecessary conflict at work and creates emotional resilience. Big picture thinking allows leaders to act proactively rather than reactively. It is the skill to see the forest for the trees and the ability to take the 10,000-feet view when challenges arise. Big picture thinking is the ability to keep the bigger vision of successful leadership without getting caught up in negative dialogues and excuses that rise with challenges at work. Given that leadership roles place enormous demands on time, attention and resources, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and fatigued.

There is, however, a dilemma if nurses overlook needs of patients that require immediate actions and if a nurse leader does not intercept staff members in crisis. This desire expressed through saying 'I need to see the big picture' is discussed to be a backbone in nursing and nursing leadership and a source of human and professional pride. This paper draws on studies undertaken in the mid 1990s and the early 2000s, but with the current discussion developed in the context of contemporary nursing. However, it has a rather imprecise meaning that might lead to misunderstandings. It is used when trying to understand a situation in its wider context. Seeing the big picture is a frequent expression among Danish nurses. This article presents a discussion of the meaning of the phenomenon of seeing the big picture in nursing.
